Text Update

Image from NRLMRY Showing the locations of the systems we're focusing on today.

Typhoon Prapiroon
Typhoon Prapiroon (Bagyong Nina) was last located approximately 970km east northeast of Basco, Batanes or about 540km southeast of Okinawa. Maximum sustained winds are at 130kph with gusts of up to 165kph. Prapiroon remains nearly stationary in the Philippine Sea but has been slowly drifting southwestward over the past 12 hours.

Forecast Track (NOT OFFICIAL!)

We expect Prapiroon to start moving westward soon and then turn northwestward. By Wednesday, the system should move northward and could pass between Okinawa and the Daito Islands by Thursday. By Friday, the system is forecast to start accelerating as it recurves to the northeast and will be passing south of the Kyushu and Shikoku Islands.

Tropical Storm Maria

Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Maria is moving across the Western Pacific, strengthening into a Severe Tropical Storm. It will accelerate to the north and could pass near Iwo To and the rest of the Ogasawara Islands tomorrow (Tuesday) and Wednesday.

Forecast Track (NOT OFFICIAL!)

We'll have another update for both systems tomorrow.
