Typhoon Noul continues to race northeastward passing through the Ryukyu Islands. The center of circulation was last located approximately 280km south southwest of Kagoshima or about 380km northeast of Naha. Maximum sustained winds are at 120kph with gusts of up to 150kph. Typhoon Noul is currently moving northeastward at a speed of 65kph.

Latest satellite image shows Noul becoming more ragged and less organized. The typhoon is starting to lose tropical characteristics as it starts to merge with an approaching cold-front. The eyewall is barely intact and convective activity is becoming fragmented. Despite the weakening, we still expect stormy conditions to move through Mainland Japan later today and into tomorrow.

Radar Image from JMA

Latest national radar mosaic of Japan (courtesy of JMA) shows the widespread rainfall associated with an approaching frontal boundary from the west. This front, combined with Typhoon Noul, will bring abundant rainfall across the Japanese Mainland. However, these rains should be quick moving with rainfall amounts of 100 to 200mm possible in some areas. Along Noul's track, expect gusty winds and even high waves along the coast.

Typhoon Noul will continue moving quickly to the northeast and is expected to make landfall in the Kansai Region (Kinki) later this afternoon. It should then move quickly across the Chubu, Kanto, and Tohoku Regions today and into the evening hours. We expect Noul to complete extra-tropical transition by tomorrow as it moves into the North Pacific.

____________________________

A Tropical Cyclone has formed in the Western Pacific today. Tropical Depression 06W is currently located near the Northern Marianas Islands, approximately 270km southeast of Guam. Maximum sustained winds are currently at 55kph with gusts of up to 75kph. TD 06W is moving northward at 10kph.

Latest satellite image shows convection continuing to build in and around the circulation of TD 06W. Favorable conditions exist in the region allowing the cyclone to consolidate at a fairly moderate pace. Further analysis reveals robust banding around the circulation which is a sign of further intensification. Rains are still offshore but may begin to impact the islands later today.

Tropical Depression 06W will continue intensifying and could become a Tropical Storm later today. The system is forecast to begin moving at a northwesterly direction and will begin impacting Guam, Saipan, and the rest of the Mariana Islands later today and into tomorrow. Rains, strong winds, and rough seas should be expected to dominate the weather in the coming days.

We'll have another update later today.
