Tropical Depression Kajiki (Basyang) Update #4 [FINAL]

Issued (22 UTC) 6am PhT 020214
_____________________________

Tropical Depression Kajiki (Bagyong Basyang) has now dissipated as it moves away from the Philippine Area of Responsibility.

The system is now over the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea) with very little convection associated with it. All weather agencies in the region have stopped giving out warnings and advisories on this depression.

This will be our final update on Kajiki. Weather conditions across the Philippines should continue to improve with some light rain showers across Luzon due to the Northeast Monsoon. Rest of the country will have clear to partly cloudy skies with small chance of light rain.

Tropical Depression Kajiki (Basyang) Update #3

Issued (11 UTC) 7pm PhT 020114
___________________________

Kajiki has weakened to a Tropical Depression and is starting to dissipate as it moves into the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea). Tropical Depression Kajiki (Bagyong Basyang) was last located approximately 220km north northeast of Puerto Princesa, Palawan or about 360km south southwest of Manila. Maximum sustained winds are now down 55kph with gusts of up to 75kph. TD Kajiki is moving west northwestward at 30kph.

As of 5pm this afternoon, PAGASA has raised Public Storm Warning Signal #1 for Northern Palawan, Calamian Group of Islands, Oriental Mindoro, and Occidental Mindoro. Other signal warnings have been dropped elsewhere.

Latest satellite image shows Kajiki continuing to unravel with fewer convective clouds forming. The low-level circulation center is also becoming increasingly difficulty to find as unfavorable conditions make it hard for the cyclone to intensify.

Tropical Depression Kajiki will continue moving west northwestward towards the West Philippine Sea. Rains have pretty much stopped across Visayas but not without dropping as much as 200mm and causing flooding and many areas. As the cyclone pulls away, expect weather conditions to improve across much of the country

We'll have another update tomorrow morning.

Latest satellite image shows the clouds associated with Tropical Storm Kajiki are now starting to move into Visayas and Northern Mindanao. Several weather stations in these areas are beginning to report light to moderate, and sometimes heavy rains over the past 3 hours. Rains will get heavier through the night, along with gusty winds.

Kajiki/Basyang is forecast to make landfall just north of Surigao and then will cross Leyte, Bohol, Cebu, Negros, Panay, and nearby islands. There will be a high chance of flooding and landslides as torrential rains are forecast to drop as much as 200mm in some places. Tropical Storm Kajiki (Basyang) Update #1

Issued (0530 UTC) 0130pm PhT 013114
________________________________

A new cyclone has formed east of the Philippines today. Tropical Storm Kajiki (Bagyong Basyang) is the second named cyclone of 2014. This system was last located approximately 420km east of Surigao City. Maximum sustained winds are at 65kph with gusts of up to 85kph. TS Kajiki is moving westward at 30kph.

As of 11am this morning, PAGASA has raised Public Storm Warning Signal #2 for Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Eastern Samar, Samar, Camotes Island, Camiguin, Dinagat Province, Surigao del Norte, Siargao Is., Northern Part of Surigao del Sur, and Northern Part of Agusan del Norte.

Latest satellite image shows strong convective clouds expanding and moving closer to the Philippine Islands. The low-level center is still partially exposed due to moderate to strong wind shear. However, the expanding cloud cover will still bring widespread rains across much of Visayas and Mindanao in the next 24 to 48 hours.

Forecast Track (NOT OFFICIAL!)

Tropical Storm Kajiki (Basyang) will continue moving quickly to the west. It is forecast to make landfall near Surigao in Northern Mindanao later tonight. Heavy rains and strong winds are possible, especially along the path of this system. Unfortunately, areas that were hit by Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) last year will be hit once more by this system. BUT, since this is a Tropical Storm that is moving quickly to the west, we are not expecting very high storm surges along the coast. Nevertheless, the threat of heavy rains, flooding, and landslides still exist in many areas.

Tropical Storm Kajiki is forecast to pass near Bohol, Cebu, Negros, Panay and nearby islands. It will then cross the northern half of Palawan by Sunday and will weaken to a Tropical Depression as it moves into the West Philippine Sea (South China Sea).

Please heed the warnings of your local officials, especially if you are under Signal Warnings issued by PAGASA!

We'll have another update later today. Stay safe!
