Tropical Update (TD Amang)

The low pressure area east of the Philippines remains weak but is showing signs of strengthening. Japan Meteorological Agency and PAGASA are now classifying the system as a tropical depression (with the latter assigning a local name of "Amang"). JTWC, on the other hand, isn't doing the same thing yet. Recent data show that the maximum winds around the LPA range from 40 to 55kph. It is moving northeast at 20kph, away from the Philippines. Convective activity is confined to the northern half as the system battles moderate wind shear and dry air. It is not forecast to strengthen significantly although JMA is still thinking that it could attain tropical storm strength in the next 24-36 hours. Whatever happens, the system is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) as early as tonight.
