The first tropical system of this season has formed in the South China Sea, near Vietnam. Tropical Depression 01W was last spotted approximately 500km east of Ho Chi Minh City. It has a maximum sustained winds of 45kph. TD 01W is currently moving wastward at around 7kph. It is forecast to start turning southward in the next 12 hours. TD 01W is not expected to strengthen significantly, however.
Meanwhile, a developing low pressure area was spotted east of the Philippines. A number of computer models forecast it to become a tropical depression in the next two days. Current guidance doesn't suggest a direct hit to the Philippines.
