Tropical Depression 97W Update #1

A new tropical system has formed today! Tropical Depression 97W is located in the South China Sea, approximately 320km east of Da Nang, Vietnam. Maximum sustained winds are around 55kph gusting to 75kph. 97W is moving slowly southeastward at a speed of 5kph.

Please note that JTWC has not upgraded this storm yet, although they have put out a TCFA for "HIGH" chance of development. We are following JMA-the official agency of the whole basin-which has upgraded 97W into a TD.

The general forecast for 97W is for it to remain weak as it drifts slowly across the South China Sea. It could strengthen into a Tropical Storm tomorrow. Models bring it towards Central Vietnam by the middle of next week.

We'll have more on TD 97W tomorrow.
