Tropical Storm Muifa (Kabayan) Update #5

For update on TS Nock-Ten please refer to our other post.

Tropical Storm Muifa has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Furthermore, JMA has also upgraded this storm into a TS giving it an international name of Muifa. For the Philippines, we haven't received word from PAGASA yet but if we are to follow the name list, Kabayan will be the local name for TS Muifa.

Muifa was last located approximately 420km northwest of Yap, 480km north of Palau, or 980km east of Borongan, Eastern Samar. Maximum sustained winds have increased to 75kph gusting to 100kph. Muifa is moving westward at 20kph.

Based on latest computer model outputs, we are not expecting Muifa to make landfall in the Philippines. However, the storm has been moving westward for quite some time now and it seems the Ridge that is steering the system is stronger than thought. Nevertheless, Muifa should start moving north anytime today. If anything, it could strengthen the SW Monsoon again as well as kick up the waves along the Eastern Seaboard of the Phippines. It should exit the PAR by the middle of next week as it heads towards Japan.
