Tropical Storm Ma-On Update #20

Tropical Storm Ma-On continues to move away from Honshu. It was last located approximately 470km south of Tokyo. Maximum sustained winds have weakened to 80kph with gusts of up to 110kph. Ma-On is moving southeastward at 20kph.

Radar from JMA shows improving conditions for much of Honshu although rain will still continue for parts of extreme southern Honshu. Rainfall amounts of up to 100mm in one day are still possible as far north as Southern Tohoku. Rip-currents and strong waves will also continue for the coastal areas all through the weekend.

For the winds, the prefectures of Chiba, Tokyo, Kanagawa, Ibaraki, and Tochigi, continue to report 20-30kph winds. The strongest winds of around 30-50kph occur near the sea; Izu islands are actually reporting winds of up to 70kph. Gale force winds will continue for the Kanto Region throughout today, although conditions are expected to improve as Ma-On moves away from the area.

By Friday, Ma-On will be well east of Kanto moving northeastward towards the North Pacific. It is expected to begin extra tropical transition as early as Saturday.
