Typhoon Chaba (Katring) Update #15

Typhoon Chaba (Katring) has strengthened further and is now a Category 4 typhoon with maximum sustained winds of up to 215kph. Chaba was last located approximately 240km southeast of Okinawa; it is moving to the north northeast at 20kph. Latest METAR reports from Kadena Air Base indicate wind gusts reaching up to 90kph. Typhoon force winds extend to about 80km from the center so Ryukyu Islands may not get typhoon strength sustained winds but may still get gusts of more than 100kph in the next 12 hours. Latest RADAR image from JMA shows moderate to heavy rain affecting the islands. The eyewall can actually be seen on that image:

The forecast track has shifted a little bit to the south. Typhoon Chaba should continue to move to the northeast and should exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility tonight. Chaba is forecast to begin weakening in the next 24-36 hours, becoming a tropical storm before brushing the southern part of Japan, somewhere south of Tokyo, this weekend.
