Latest satellite image shows uniform central dense overcast with strong convective activity and good radial outflow. Wutip intensified into a typhoon overnight and continues to show improvement this morning aided by weak wind shear and warm sea-surface temperatures in the region. It will likely continue to intensify today and could become a Category 2 later this afternoon.

Outer rain bands from Wutip should begin to impact Hainan Island later today. Furthermore, strong winds of up to 120kph are also possible especially along the southern coast of Hainan. Wutip will pass south of the island tonight and will continue heading westward towards Vietnam.

We are expecting landfall near Da Nang, Vietnam by early Monday morning. Wutip could make landfall as a strong Category 2 typhoon capable of bringing winds of up to 185kph as well as heavy rainfall along its path. Residents in and around Da Nang should continue to monitor the developments of this typhoon and should begin to prepare now, if possible.

We'll have another update later today.
