Typhoon Muifa Update #26

Typhoon Muifa is now finally moving away from Okinawa, this after dumping heavy rain and bringing strong winds for more than 24 hours! It was last located approximately 150km west of Okinawa moving northwestward at 10kph. Maximum sustained winds have decreased to 150kph gusting to 185kph. Muifa has been downgraded to a Category 1 typhoon.

Many areas in Okinawa have reported receiving more than 300mm of rain and some spots actually reporting 400mm or more. Latest radar image from JMA is still showing heavy bands of rain moving across the islands. Rain should continue for at least another 3 hours before finally dying down. Winds also continue to be around tropical storm strength with occasional gust of typhoon-force still being reported. Conditions should graduall improve later today.

Muifa is still forecast to intensify slightly over the East China Sea. It will then pass within 200km east of Shanghai by Sunday morning perhaps as a Category 2 typhoon. It will make another landfall in Shandong Peninsula on Monday before weakening to a Tropical Storm over the Bohai Sea by Tuesday.
