Typhoon Fanapi (Inday) Update #5

Typhoon Fanapi (Inday) is still strengthening and is also beginning to turn to the northwest. Maximum sustained winds are at 140kph; gusts can reach up to 165kph. Typhoon Fanapi is moving to the northwest at 5kph.

(No significant changes with the forecast.)

Fanapi will continue intensifying as it moves towards Taiwan. It could peak at 165kph, equivalent to a category 2 storm. Landfall is expected on Sunday, just south of Taipei. Fanapi will then cross the Taiwan Strait and will make a second landfall as a strong tropical storm near the vicinity of Xiamen, China on Monday.

Due to the sheer size of this storm, it is possible that northernmost islands of the Philippines (e.g. Batanes) might feel the effects of Typhoon Fanapi (Inday) in the next 24-36 hours. Gusty winds, increased wave heights, and some moderate rain embedded in the outer bands could impact these islands.
