IR Image from NRLMRY
Latest satellite image shows the center of Ewiniar south of Honshu. The center has actually improved in organization this morning with the system briefly showing an eye at one point. It has weakened since and the cloud tops have warmed; convective activity has also become fragmented.
Radar from JMA
Despite the distance, Ewiniar is bringing some light rain showers across Southeastern Honshu and may actually impact parts of Tokyo by tonight and into tomorrow. These rains are not expected to amount to anything big, mainly nuisance but something to consider. Aside from the rains, strong winds are also being reported in Izu Islands (Archipelago just south of Honshu) with some stations recorded sustained winds of up to 75kph. Tropical storm-force winds will likely continue here and could even spread into the coast of Honshu (Chiba Prefecture) by tonight and into tomorrow. Overall, though, we expect these stormy conditions to not be significant and should move away from the region by Saturday. As always, it's best to consult your local officials for the latest warnings and forecasts. You can check out the Japan Meteorological Agency by clicking HERE
Forecast Track (NOT OFFICIAL!)
Tropical Storm Ewiniar continues to move northward but should turn more to the northeast. It is also forecast to slow down as it rounds the subtropical ridge but should pick up speed once more by Saturday. Ewiniar will stay far from Honshu as it accelerates to the northeast as it encounters the strong upper-level westerly winds. It could start transitioning into an extra-tropical cyclone by tomorrow and could complete that cycle by Sunday or Monday as it moves across the North Pacific.
We'll have another update on Tropical Storm Ewiniar tomorrow. Our complete Text and Video Updates for Typhoon Jelawat will be up in about an hour.
